– Despite skepticism from some quarters, WWE intends to keep SmackDown on Friday nights upon its return to the USA Network.

The forthcoming partnership between SmackDown and the USA Network signifies a landmark deal for the show as WWE’s broadcast strategy undergoes significant shifts.

In a groundbreaking move, WWE secures a $5 billion agreement with Netflix, signaling the streaming giant’s foray into live wrestling with the acquisition of Monday Night Raw. This transition marks the end of Raw’s 31-year tenure on network television, as the show migrates to Netflix in the United States starting in January. Meanwhile, WWE’s other flagship shows, including SmackDown, NXT, and PLE’s, will find a global audience on the platform.

After a hiatus of five years from the USA Network, SmackDown is poised to make its comeback in October 2024, following its stint on Fox since 2009. This return is part of a lucrative $1.4 billion deal spanning five years, with WWE committed to producing four prime-time specials annually on NBC.

In discussions on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer shed light on WWE’s plans to retain SmackDown’s Friday night slot upon transitioning to the USA Network. While some express reservations about this decision, Meltzer indicates that WWE remains steadfast in its intent despite potential concerns from USA Network executives.

“We will have to wait and see whether Friday Night SmackDown returning to the USA Network will end up becoming the best deal WWE made for the blue brand so far.”
