Wrestling Legend Questions the Risks Taken in Front of Small Crowds

Summary

– The Undertaker recently spoke out against the use of light tubes in wrestling, criticizing their lack of storytelling.

– He questioned why wrestlers take such extreme risks, especially when performing in front of small audiences.

– The Deadman emphasized that for him, the risk must be justified by a worthwhile reward, especially if under a major promotion like WWE.

The Undertaker has left an indelible mark on professional wrestling, with a career spanning over three decades. Although he’s retired, The Deadman closely monitors the current wrestling scene. Recently, he took to his Six Feet Under podcast to share his thoughts on modern matches, particularly criticizing the use of light tubes.

Throughout wrestling history, foreign objects have been key in adding drama to matches. From tables and chairs to more match-specific props like shovels in a buried alive match, weapons have always played a role in elevating the stakes. However, over time, the use of weapons has become increasingly extreme, with some wrestlers turning to barbed wire, pizza cutters, and staple guns to intensify their bouts.

The Undertaker voiced his concern over this trend, particularly the use of fluorescent bulbs, stating he doesn’t understand the story behind such matches. Highlighting clips he’s seen online, he criticized wrestlers for risking serious injury in front of small audiences. “I don’t know what the story is,” he remarked, “All I’m seeing is, there’s not enough people in that audience to generate enough money to get me to take something that ridiculous.”

He emphasized that if he were on WWE’s payroll, the company would have to make the risk worth his while. The Undertaker suggested that some wrestlers might believe such extreme spots could go viral and gain their attention, but he questions whether it justifies the danger involved.

Addressing the possibility of having one more match post-retirement, The Undertaker appeared skeptical. Meanwhile, he acknowledged that many wrestlers will continue to push the envelope, using light tubes and other extreme weapons, regardless of the risks.
