Shawn Spears Calls NXT His “Last Stop” and Reflects on His WWE Journey

The NXT North American Champion opens up about his future and career fulfillment

Summary

– Shawn Spears considers NXT his final destination in professional wrestling

– He is content with his role and does not expect a main roster call-up

– Spears remains dedicated to teaching at the WWE Performance Center and Flatbacks Wrestling School

Shawn Spears is embracing what he calls the “last stop” of his wrestling career. After returning to WWE in February 2024, the 44-year-old recently captured the NXT North American Championship by defeating Tony D’Angelo. While he remains competitive, Spears acknowledges that his in-ring career is winding down.

Speaking with Gabby AF, Spears said he plans to keep wrestling as long as he can, provided it doesn’t interfere with his family life. “I feel good. I’m still moving, and I feel like I can still keep up with the younger kids,” he explained. However, his focus is shifting more toward coaching, both at the WWE Performance Center and Flatbacks Wrestling School, which he co-runs with Tyler Breeze.

Despite his success in NXT, Spears does not anticipate a main roster call-up, stating he is content where he is. “It’s WWE’s call, but right now I’m very fulfilled, I’m very happy with where I am,” he said. Having shared the ring with many of WWE’s top stars over the years, Spears believes his current role suits him best.

Spears first signed with WWE in 2006 before departing in 2009. He returned in 2013, competing in NXT and the main roster, before leaving again in 2019 to join AEW. His contract with AEW expired at the start of 2024, leading to his return to WWE and his current run in NXT.

During an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Spears spoke positively about his time in AEW, particularly his work with MJF and FTR. “A lot of things that I would have never gotten to do, I was very fortunate enough to do there,” he said. Back in WWE, Spears is focused on making the most of his final chapter while mentoring the next generation of wrestlers.
