At the recent premiere of his new Paramount+ series, Rabbit Hole, Kiefer Sutherland spoke to entertainment reporters about his willingness to return to the role of Jack Bauer in the hit TV series 24. The actor revealed that he had learned never to say no to the possibility of bringing back the beloved show, even after initially stating that season 8 would be its final installment.
Sutherland spoke candidly about the show’s potential return, saying that several elements would need to come together for it to happen. However, he also made it clear that he would not be the reason for any potential roadblocks. “When we finished season 8, I said we were done, and yet we did a season 9,” he said. “There’s a lot of elements that would have to come together to make that happen, but I certainly would not be the reason why it didn’t.”
The actor went on to express his deep appreciation for the fans of 24, saying that the show was one of the greatest experiences he has had in his career. He described his love for the character of Jack Bauer and how much he enjoyed portraying him over the course of the series.
While Sutherland may be open to returning to 24, his latest project is a departure from the high-octane action of the hit series. In Rabbit Hole, he plays John Weir, a master of deception in the world of corporate espionage who is framed for murder by powerful forces with the ability to manipulate and control populations.
Speaking about his new series, Sutherland revealed that he was involved in the creative process from the beginning and was often surprised by the plot twists and turns. “John and Glen who created the series, they created the show kind of in front of me, so, I was more included in most,” he said. “But still, when you see writers who are as talented as they are, apply what we discussed as an idea, and how that idea actually comes to fruition — yeah, I have to be honest, there were a couple of moments I was really surprised by the way that idea was delivered and excited by.”
Despite being a work of fiction, Sutherland emphasized that Rabbit Hole deals with very real issues such as the manipulation of information and technology, and how personal information can be used against individuals. He called it a “frightening scenario” that society will need to address sooner or later.
As for when fans can expect to see Rabbit Hole, the espionage thriller streams on Paramount+ starting from March 26th offer a fresh look at Sutherland’s acting skills while leaving the possibility of Jack Bauer’s return up in the air.
